Most of what I’ve built has come out of the same instinct: a problem sits unsolved long enough that I decide to fix it myself. I have founded and run a small company, led a team through a sector-wide research study that reached the highest levels of government, and built a malware-detection engine from scratch that earned independent industry certification. Different problems, same outcome: find what’s actually wrong, build something real for it, and see it through.
Right now, that instinct is pointed at one of the world’s top 1% domain registrars, where I built and now maintain the support infrastructure the organization runs on: the systems that route critical issues to the right people, surface a domain’s full diagnostic picture in one place instead of five, and a handful of smaller services, schedulers, runners, integrations, running underneath all of it. I identified what needed building and built it, and I am still the one keeping it running.
I came to engineering self-taught, reading and rebuilding things until they made sense rather than following a formal path. That background is why I default to understanding something from first principles rather than taking it on faith, and why I would rather ship something small and considered than something large and noisy.
Outside of that, I’m drawn to problems where reliability and scale actually matter: how a system behaves under real load, where it breaks, what it takes to keep something running once it’s live rather than just shipped. Networking and domain infrastructure, DNS among them, are where I spend the most time, but the underlying interest is the same wherever it shows up. I work mainly in Python and Rust, alongside whatever side project has pulled me in that month.
#runbykomal is where I keep a record of that process: the decisions, the dead ends, and the trade-offs that shaped whatever eventually worked. It exists because I already kept these notes privately, and it seemed more useful to make them public than to keep them to myself.
